Parashat Vaetchanan | Shabbat Nachamu | The Shabbat of Comfort July 21, 2026

*Shalom, Mishpacha —*

It's Tuesday, and this is a heavy week before it is a comforting one. Tomorrow night we enter Tisha B'Av, the fast that mourns the destruction of both Temples. But this coming Shabbat carries two names. It is Parashat Vaetchanan — “I pleaded” — where Moses begs to enter the Land and is gently told no. It is also Shabbat Nachamu, the first Sabbath of comfort, the Shabbat that always follows Tisha B'Av. We will mourn the Temple on Wednesday night. By Saturday morning, we are told to be comforted. Both are true at once — the shape of faith in a land still waiting for its fullest healing.

Adonai,
We come this Shabbat carrying both halves of this week: the ash of Tisha B'Av, and the word of comfort already ringing in our ears.

The Plea
Moses pleaded and You still said no — instead sending him to “climb to the top of Pisgah and see it with your eyes” (Deuteronomy 3:27, TLV). So many in this region are pleading right now — for the ceasefire in Gaza to hold and deepen, for captives fully home, for the stabilization and disarmament process to move forward without collapsing back into war. Give wisdom to every leader carrying a piece of this fragile peace.

The Shema
At the center of this portion: “Hear, O Israel! Adonai our God, Adonai is one!” (Deuteronomy 6:4, TLV). Write this on the hearts of Your people in the land — in shelters, on borders, in offices making costly decisions. Let it be recited this week not as ritual but as refuge.

The Comfort
“Comfort, comfort My people,” says your God… “her time of struggle is over, her guilt has been paid” (Isaiah 40:1–2, TLV). Comfort the bereaved, the hostages' families still waiting, the exhausted in Gaza, the communities in the north and south who still don't feel safe. “Every valley will be raised up, every mountain made low” (Isaiah 40:4, TLV) — level the obstacles, Lord, standing between this region and real peace.

Together
Moses saw the land from a distance; Isaiah comforts a people not yet home. We stand in that same middle place this week. Let Your purposes prevail in Israel, Gaza, Lebanon, and the Middle East. Protect her citizens, soldiers, and communities. Strengthen every fragile peace. Hasten the day Israel sees her Messiah, and Zion says, “Adonai has comforted His people.”
“He tends His flock like a shepherd, He gathers the lambs in His arm, and carries them in His bosom.” (Isaiah 40:11, TLV — Haftarah, Vaetchanan)
