The Blessing and the Fire: Nasso and Beha'alotcha

Tuesday, June 2, 2026 · Congregation Sha'arei Shalom

Shalom, Mishpacha —

We are in the week between two Torah portions that belong together like breath and flame. Nasso — which we read this past Shabbat — closes the long work of ordering the camp, crowning it all with the Birkat Kohanim. Beha'alotcha — which we read this coming Shabbat — ignites that ordered camp into motion: Aaron kindles the Menorah, the cloud lifts, and Israel begins to move.

You cannot have the journey without the blessing. You cannot have the flame without the vessel set in order to receive it. Nasso builds the vessel; Beha'alotcha lights it. This week, Israel needs both. Please join us in prayer.

Avinu שֶׁבַּשָּׁמַיִם — Our Father in Heaven,

We come before You, standing between these two portions. In Nasso, You ordered the camp and crowned it with Aaron's blessing. In Beha'alotcha, You told Aaron to kindle the Menorah, the cloud lifted, and the journey began. First, the blessing. Then the fire. We pray that same sequence over Israel today.

First: The Blessing — from Parashat Nasso

Twelve tribal leaders brought their gifts to the Mishkan — twelve leaders, twelve days, twelve identical offerings — and You received every one as though it were the first. No tribe is overlooked. No name forgotten.

Lord, You see Israel today the same way. You see the soldiers pressing into southern Lebanon, the families in the north sheltering from Hezbollah drones, and the fallen — each one known to You by name. You see a Knesset that voted 106 to zero to begin dissolving itself, a nation weary and politically strained. You see every name. And so we speak over Israel the blessing Aaron was commanded to speak — not as a formula, but as a cry:

"May Adonai bless you and keep you. May Adonai make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. May Adonai turn His face toward you and grant you shalom." (Numbers 6:24–26, TLV)

You said that when Aaron spoke these words, You would place Your name on Israel and bless her. We ask You to place Your name on Israel today. Not the seal of any treaty, not the blessing of any administration — Your name. The name that Yeshua carried into the world and carries still as Israel's Messiah and Great High Priest, ever living to make intercession.

Bless and keep her. Make Your face shine on her. Give her shalom.

Then: The Fire — from Parashat Beha'alotcha

Beha'alotcha opens with the command to kindle the Menorah until the flame rises and burns on its own. And Israel moved only when the cloud lifted — not ahead of Your Presence, not lagging behind in fear. They waited on You.

Today, ceasefires are announced and immediately disputed, and the Iran talks are simultaneously declared ongoing and suspended — a thick fog of contradictory signals. We do not always know what is true. But You know.

We ask for the cloud of Your Presence to descend on these negotiations. Give discernment to those who speak for the United States. Let no agreement trade Israel's long-term security for a fragile peace, and let no nuclear ambition be left buried in the fine print. Grant negotiators the discipline of Beha'alotcha: to move when You say move, to hold when You say hold, and to refuse the temptation to run ahead of Your cloud for the sake of a headline.

Together: Vessel and Flame

When the people grew weary in the wilderness, even Moses cried out: "I cannot carry all these people alone — the burden is too heavy for me" (Numbers 11:14). So You gave him seventy elders, anointed with the same Spirit, to share the load.

Lord, raise up for Israel that kind of leadership — and for our little mishpacha at Sha'arei Shalom, raise up that same Spirit-filled company of people who know how to carry one another and how to pray. Yesterday, tens of thousands marched in New York's Israel Day Parade, a river of solidarity moving through the streets of Manhattan. We give thanks for every such flame — and we pray that among them, and among us, the deeper flame would burn: the knowledge that Israel's Messiah lives, intercedes, and is coming again to the city He wept over.

That is Nasso and Beha'alotcha together: the blessing that names us, and the fire that leads us home.

"Not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit, says Adonai-Tzva'ot." (Zechariah 4:6 — Haftarah, Beha'alotcha)

B'shem Yeshua HaMashiach —

Amen.
